Cancer care

The Mater's cancer care service promotes a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care to provide support that is comprehensive and personal.

Our combined experience in treating complex cancers means patients receive treatment from a team of nationally recognised cancer specialists, who have a commitment to the latest innovations in cancer care.

The Mater cancer care team comprises surgical oncology, medical and radiation oncologists and haematologists, including experts in pathology and nuclear medicine. Joining these specialists are experienced oncology nursing staff, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and a pastoral care team who provide holistic care.

A multidisciplinary approach

Best practice in terms of treatment planning and care for cancer patients is provided by a multidisciplinary team. A multidisciplinary team is a group of health professionals who meet to discuss all relevant treatment options and develop an individual treatment plan for each cancer patient.

Our team of specialists meet weekly or fortnightly, depending on the cancer type, for individual patient case discussion and ongoing education of the team members. This is done under strict confidential guidelines, a patient's consent will be sought and information will be given prior to the meeting taking place by your treating specialist.

This collaborative approach allows the team to make decisions about the most appropriate treatment and supportive care for a patient, while taking into account the individual patient's preferences and circumstances.
